Exploring the Smart Power of the “Loyal” City

In the 70s, singer Luo Da-you’s universally-known song
“Little Lugang Town” (Lugang xiao zhen) turned this simple,
unsophisticated little town into a sudden hot spot for tourists.
Lugang’s popularity also bolstered Changhua County’s
tourism. Like the saying “read a thous and books, travel a
thousand miles,” Footprints of Taiwan—Changhua County
displays the breadth of Changhua County’s history,
humanities, natural scenery, industries, and religious faiths.
We have specially selected 20 routes to guide readers who
would like to get to know Changhua.

An irrigation ditch was built during the middle period of the
Qing Emperor Kangxi, attracting an influx of immigrants
to Changhua. In the first year of the Qing Yongzheng
Emperor, Changhua County was established between the
Huwei River in the north and the Dajia River in the south.
This area included today’s Taichung City, Nantou County,and
Changhua County. The name Changhua means “to manifest
royalty. ”

Changhua County was established 280 years ago.
Changhua’s Mother River, the Babao Canal, was Taiwan’s first
irrigation canal in the Qing Dynasty. The irrigation canal
flows through 18 of Changhua’s 26 townships, making
Changhua one of Taiwan’s most important granaries. The
Babao Canal is a bubbling water source that continues to
irrigate Changhua’s fields today.The irrigation canal
nourishes the land and people of Changhua, leading to the
presence of abundant historical relics and buildings in the
county, the number of which ranks third among all cities and
counties in Taiwan. Temples, old residences, shrines, and
various types of historical buildings still preserve their
antique appearances, such as Lugang’s Longshan Temple,
Changhua’s Confucious Temple, Xiushui’s Yiyuan Residence,
Yongjing’s Yusan Building, and Shetou’s Doushan Temple.
Additionally, the Fan-shaped Train Depot attracts Japanese
train fanatics. This fan-shaped train depot—the only one of
its kind in Taiwan—is not only a dynamic museum, but also
rates as a national-level historic relic.

Rooted in the farming industry, Changhua County’s
agricultural products and other products related to the
farming industry have taken on a level of distinctiveness.
Changhua is Taiwan’s largest special horticulture area and
secondlargest polished glutinous rice production area. Also,
Fenyuan’s Fengkeng rice noodles, Yuanlin’s preserved fruits,
Huatan’s jasmine flowers, and Dacun’s grapes have become
famous agricultural products throughout Taiwan.

In recent years, Changhua County has actively promoted
community building and the establishment of museums
focused on regional characteristics to properly utilize
recreational space, integrating local cultural space,
scenery,and industry to become regional assets for tourism.
Business circles have also successively established industry
culture museums, such as the Taiwan Glass Museum and the
Brand’s Health Museum, both of which are worthwhile visits.
Additionally, Lugang’s Guihua Lane Artists’ Village
renovated Japanese era dormitories to provide artists with
residences as a way to promote art events and exhibition
spaces, allowing visitors to talk to artists about their
creative processes and influences.

Changhua’s cuisine is varied and delicious. The unbroken
inter tidal zone on the west coast nourishes Taiwan’s
plumpest oysters and mud shrimp, both of which are favorites
among food connoisseurs. Baguashan is where pineapple
cakes originally came from and is currently the most
thriving pineapple cake production area. Taiwanese meatballs
or “rou yuan” from Changhua and Beidou and the popular
“huang rou fan” are both a must for visitors to Changhua.

Footprints of Taiwan-Changhua County is a book written by
locals in the hopes of putting Changhua’s culture on display
for readers. Readers can travel through the past and present
through words and pictures, crossing time and space, to
understand the path of Changhua’s historical development.
